O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. Judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the jury. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the second lowest. The judges were shocked, and they recommended that people vote for Melissa who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. Her performance on September 7, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was declared by the Premier Paul Martin immediately.
