O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois she graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High school in 1981. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady's first job was modeling for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She first appeared on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest as a guest on independent films and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary on ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 to in 1996. Every year, she received Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in the Drama Series.
